Things are tense. Very tense. And Gibbs keeps eying the lifeboats. Thinking that soon he and the captain will have to use one.

Not that Gibbs is letting on about that fear. He's busy inspecting the ship in the early morning, hoping that maybe he can forestall the mutiny one day more.

"Trust me."

There's not a whole lot of family resemblance between the brothers green these days. Mostly because they're not so much with the green. But...there is one thing that they share, and that's the same broad smile that very clearly Should Not Be Trusted.

Why is Gibbs reminded of Jack?

"No offense, but we're pirates. Trust isn't exactly the coin of the realm."

"S'all right, I'm ninja. We ain't all that trustworthy to begin with."

"Ninja..." Gibbs glares just a bit. "Honest to god?" He knows the word. And the legends. (He's Gibbs. He knows all the legends.) But he never believed them.

He really should know better.

If he didn't before, he should really start believing now.

"Never if I can help it," says the consummate atheist. "But I ain't lying, if that's what you mean. People that go 'round sayin' they're ninja when they really ain't don't usually have a long life expectancy."

"You may have a point. Though I wouldn't put it past...some people." Like Jack. Not that Jack has ever said he was a ninja, to Gibbs' knowledge. "But that would explain the whole hiding thing."

He nods.
"We tend to stick close to the shadows, yeah. Professional preference," is the only explanation he gives.

"Which is about as unlike a pirate as you can get. We tend to be more...well lit." And obvious.

"So I've noticed."
Yeah he won't be taking advantage of that anytime soon or anything. No siree bob.

"And I suspect, if it matters, that the rest of the crew won't notice you." Only the ken eye of a man with Gibbs' experience could do such things.

Raph tries to look as innocent as possible.

"Not that it matters, but that would make my time here that much more...leisurely."

"I think that the less we have to see of you, the better." He gets it now. This man, this ninja, is the captain's emergency plan. The man who can get her (and hopefully Gibbs) off the ship safely. That such a plan is needed isn't reassuring, but at least Gibbs doesn't feel an obligation to begin practicing his swimming.

"Agreed."

He pauses for a second.

"You know, until after this all blows over, of course. It's good to see you again, Gibbs."

It's even better that he didn't have to kill you.

"Er, yes." He pauses, trying to recall details. "You had hair, didn't you?"

His smile freezes.
"why's it always gotta be 'bout the hair?" he says with a sigh. "Yeah, was ten years younger then too. Got held up in another world for a while."

"That would explain why you seem different." That and how sometimes Gibbs' memory takes a blow or two from all that rum. "Did the angel send you through time?"

"Angel?" He blinks in confusion. He sort of missed that plot. "Nah, door just went bust an' didn't appear for a longass time. I was visitin' Alanna, Adam, and the kids, next thing I knew I was a long lost member of the family."

These things happen.

"Alanna adopted you...you should have just said as much." That's as good as a letter of introduction from the king and Jack Sparrow. Probably better.

Probably better than, actually. Considering how the last meeting between Sparrow and Raph went down. Pirate hit Raph upside the head with a bottle of rum, knocking the ninja to the floor in a heap.

"Didn't know whether or not you knew of her, to be honest."

Beat.

"But then again, she did spend an awful lot of time here before she got married..."

"Aye. She and I got pretty close. If she trusts you, I trust you.

"Though I hadn't any notion it had been that long for her." No wonder he never sees her around.

He chuckles.
"I wouldn't go so far as to say she trusts me. Think it's more that she's been stuck with me seein' as I'm the only one that can stand her kids for long stretches of time."

That's Raph, ever the babysitter.

"She hasn't kicked you out in ten years. Or killed you. She doesn't suffer fools gladly." Or at all.

"Not gladly, no."
Again, another knowing smirk.

"She is well, though. They both are, actually. Kids are springin' up like weeds every day."

Which was something new for Raph to experience, never having had much experience with children before Milliways. And certainly not in watching them grow up.

"Well, once this is done, and you get back to Tortall, tell Alanna that Gibbs sends his regards and that he hopes she's well. And that she should visit the Bar." And just knowing that the captain has found a ninja who's trained with Sir Alanna goes a long way to putting Gibbs at ease for the first time in weeks.

"I think that can be arranged."

While Raph's job here is to not play favorites and remove or otherwise immobilize any and all threats to Liz's claim to the ship, Gibbs is really starting to grow on him.

"You know, provided we live through this."
