Christmas on the Pearl

The Captain's quarters are set. The large desk has been cleared of Jack's personal goods. The rest of the room is neat and orderly, as it tends to be (much to Gibbs' constant surprise). Whatever chairs can be found belowdecks have been dragged up by the first mate, creating a cozy feel.

The desk and the larger chests are covered with oilcloth, which serve as crude tablecloths. The ship's hodgepodge of dishes, cups and silverware, plundered from many ports and ships, sit near a selection of traditional holiday treats, from ham to mincepie. At the center of the desk, there is a crystal decanter with a gold nameplate saying "Captain Jack Sparrow", filled with red wine, surrounded by matching glasses.

And there is a small, sparsely decorated tree in a corner near the hammock.

It's Christmas on the Black Pearl. Welcome.

"I'm not exactly sure I would say he is well," she confesses softly, "but at least he has his ship."

Her smile is slow, but quite wicked.

"Must it be one or the other? My aim was always to be both impressive AND free."

"It could be both, aye, but your world is, I would guess, not mine. I would ever ventrue that it's no longer mine, either." That Alanna comes from a place unlike his seems to be less strange than it used to. A little, anyway.

"But are we not there already?" Gibbs is confused, but not so much so that he doesn't notice how little love Miss Swann has for the ship. And perhaps for Jack.

"No, it's not yours, I'm sorry to say." She smiles sadly. "Although there is a benefit to it. You and Jack could come sailing in our seas. Anytime you like, after the babies are born. I won't be going terribly far for the foreseeable future."

Surreptitiously, Alanna looks at Jack.

"How is he these days? What with winter and all?"

Of anyone, she trusts Gibbs to know his captain's moods.

"So you would think," Elizabeth remarks. There's an edge to her voice. "But the witch claims there is farther yet to go. There's more."

Clearing her throat, she looks around and motions for him to come closer.

"Barbosa returned," she hisses.

"But...Jack killed him..." The implications are bone-chilling.

And after staring for a moment, he speaks. "Does not anyone stay dead? What dark forces are we doomed to face again and again?" There is little Christmas cheer now.

The idea of being on the seas nad no on this pond chers Gibbs. Jack's state, though...

"The captain is...unpredictable. He seems fine for a few days, seems himself again after so long being vexed by his own shadow. But then he loses himself in something. His other face, his respectable face, emerged again, and vanished. He even went so far as to shave, though that lasted only as long as that face did. But it was strange, and still cannot say if that was not all a scheme or a true change."

Related? Not in the least. Adopted? Well...yeah, kinda. Red heads had to stick together after all.

And Rachel seemed rather comfortable in spandex.

She smiled though, a small, warm expression and offered a nod of greeting. "Hi" simple and to the point.

"I should have asked who else was coming, I'd have walked with you" for company of course, as Alanna had gotten herself there just fine.

"Merry Christmas was what I was taught. Did you get your gifts?"

"She is a fine ship" she agreed with that same smile, gaze drifting slowly along the walls and towards a window...

"Jack taught me how to steer, or as well I could learn in just a night" she admitted softly. "And I am on fire usually, so no need to worry about your eye sight."

"How long have you traveled with Jack?" she asked curiously.

What's more odd? That a lass would be on fire, or that Jack would teach a lass to steer? Though here anything is likely, and Jack surely had something else in mind with the lass.

"I've been on the Pearl this past year, since we took it back from the scoundrel Barbossa. But I've traveled with the Captain for many years now. Since I mustered out of the navy, and I found myself in need of an occupation."

Bone chilling indeed. Breath a faint cloud in the night air, Elizabeth clutches his arm with firm fingers and says,

"The situation has changed, it seems. I do not know how much control the witch has over Barbosa, but he is to lead us to world's end."

Is or was? That remains unclear, in her mind.

"Good evening," Elizabeth stiffly replies. "We've not met. I'm Elizabeth Swann."

If this woman is a friend of Jack's, it's probably best to get that out of the way.

She stiffens.

"He went all respectable again? Goddess. I'd hoped that was a one-time thing."

Thinking, Alanna swipes a hank of rope and absently ties a knot.

"If it happens again, will you let me know? I'll be here, in the staff quarters. I might be able to help."

"I did," Alanna tells her, eyes shining. "They're absolutely perfect, and thank you so much. I've a gift for you, but it's in my rooms."

Murmuring a quick spell, Alanna spins the purple light of her magic into an image of a small sword.

"For our lessons, when I'm back on my feet."

He raises an eyebrow. "You work here?" Surely it's not with the brothel, but what other jobs are here?

"And when this strange place sees to let me go, that's what I'll face?" Gibbs looks around but all the rum is the Captain's quarters. And he still hasn't replaced his flask. "Perhaps Milliways is doing me a favor in delaying my fate."

"Security. I'm a deputy now -- inactive for the time being, naturally -- but I headed the team for many months."

She laughs.

"I'll never forget the look on Jack's face when I told him that. It was like he just swallowed something particularly disagreeable."

"Not me," is her sharp reply. "I wish it would let me go so that we can get on with what needs to be done. So that things might be set to rights."

She looks away quickly at the last.

Re: Arrivals

[identity profile] pirate-gibbs.livejournal.com 2006-12-26 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
"Security? There's a security unit here?" First he's hearing of it. "And they let you be in charge. Do they know of your visits to this ship before it arrived here?" That a woman could run a security unit, he can accept so long as it's Alanna. But surely she isn't going to make their lives difficult, is she?

[identity profile] pirate-gibbs.livejournal.com 2006-12-26 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
"Set to rights?" He considers this. "You mean finding your way back to Port Royal and getting the East India Company to let you and Will to let you live your lives?" Which is something he suspects cannot be done.

"I earned it," Alanna says with a shrug. "Archie Kennedy is head now. There's an office in the staff quarters, complete with holding cells. There are far too many powerful beings here not to have some sort of system in place."

Smiling, she nods.

"Aye, they know. Don't worry, outside business is of no concern. Only what happens here matters."

Impatient, Elizabeth shakes her head before he's done speaking.

"No. I mean retrieving Jack and his ship, however Tia Dalma means us to do it."

She can't think of the rest until this is done.

Re: Arrivals

[identity profile] pirate-gibbs.livejournal.com 2006-12-26 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
"Archie is your commander?" That gets a bit of smirk. "Well I suppose that you should have a man at this position. But I trust he relies on your skills?" He likes Archie, but Alanna is more impressive (even to his 18th century eyes). He thinks considers the overall situation.

"But what you're saying is that if we were to indulge in a little of our own method of making a living here, you would have to treat us like anyone else?" Disappointing, but not unreasonable.

He nods, but it takes time for it to soak in.

"Does Jack know this is all going to pass?"
